THE DAY AFTER – I found out yesterday that I will not be advancing into the semi-finals of the Around the World in 80 Days contest from Dubai.

I am still recovering from the madness that has obsessed me for eight weeks, since I first discovered, on the last day or the day before the last day of the year 2009 that the contest was opening and would close on February 22. Since then, January 1 or rather January Negative First or even Negative Second, I have been obsessed, yes, I say it again, obsessed, with the planning of trips wherever it is that the airline I believe will provide the ticket does fly.

I am back to my normal obsessive self, worrying about poems and my dreams and the landscape of my childhood.

I was asked to take two items of clothing to the dry cleaners in La Mesa where my mother has always taken her dry cleaning, since the 1960s, or maybe even the 1950s, yes, I was asked to take two items there today, a seven mile drive from the city of San Diego neighborhood where I live now, where she lives now, a seven mile drive out into the inner suburbs to the old suburban boulevard dry cleaning establishment, and on the way back I drove alone El Cajon boulevard and stopped at the North Park produce which has moved into east San Diego where there used to be an Arab supermarket and it is still an Arab supermarket they do not sell any pork or pig products there and they have the best black tea and Arabian rice and lentil products, yes they do.

Now I remember why I wanted to speak Arabic. To make good rice with mutton.
